Marietta Ku began her music education on the piano and later took up the violin. She received an SSO-PSC scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music, London, under the tutelage of violist Roger Tapping, violinist Howard Davis and pianists Aaron Shorr and Antonietta Notariello. Graduating as top student, she obtained an RAM scholarship and the Tan Kah Kee Scholarship for Higher Education to pursue postgraduate studies. Concurrently conferred an M Mus and the Diploma of Advanced Studies, she was also the first to receive the LRAM for violin, viola and piano.
Marietta has worked with renowned musicians including Sir Colin Davis, Donald McInnes, Rivka Golani, and the Amadeus and Chilingirian Quartets. She was appointed principal violist at the Edinburgh Music Festival, the Reigate Music Festival and the Lake District Summer Music Festival. She represented Singapore at the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra and the Pan-Pacific Super Strings in Japan. Recipient of numerous awards, she is also the first Singaporean prize-winner at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.
Presently violinist-cum-violist with the SSO, Marietta is an avid recitalist, conductor, educator and chamber musician. She co-founded the chamber groups Chamber Circle and SPITZE. Besides championing an extensive solo viola repertoire, she premiered and recorded the works of local composers Phoon Yew Tien, Tan Chan Boon, Tsao Chieh and Yu Danquan. As conductor of the RI(JC), Raffles Girls’Secondary, SOTA and Dunman High String Ensembles, Marietta has led her ensembles on performance tours to Hong Kong and the UK.
